Darkling #1 Review from IndyPlanet

IndyPlanet, our online seller, recently changed their site design completely. Most of the changes rock but one specific feature unfortunately got shafted; REVIEWS.

Gone are the lovely reviews of our stuff on there, which is a friggin’ tragedy since we can’t afford to send out comp copies to pro online reviewers, and this was pretty much the only feedback we were getting in public. Grrr.

So thanks to the marvels of google, I’ve managed to save some of the reviews to post here.

This one for the first issue of The Darkling Series 1, from IndyPlanet user Luthor Dare (who was AWESOME enough to review a lot of our stuff! Thanks, Luthor! You ROCK!):

The Darkling: Sexier than Twilight!

The Darkling: Sexier than Twilight!

The first thing you’ll have to do when you get this book is to turn it sideways. The book is formatted so that you must open it as if you were checking out the centerfold in Playboy Magazine, and read the pages from top to bottom, instead of left to right. I’ll admit, that takes some getting used to, since I’ve be reading comics the other way my whole life. But that’s the thing about the Fine Folks at Futurius, they don’t want to do things the way they’ve always been done.

As for the story, it’s a rather simple tale, where we’re introduced to The Darkling, or “D”, as she prefers to be called, a 21 year old hip blue-skinned female vampire, as she goes out late at night to roam the city, in search of something to quell her boredom. She gets attacked by a big monster (a “Shadowvamp), and decides to basically adopt it as her pet.

Throughout the story we’re also treated to some fun little-known vampire facts (All vampires are obsessive-compulsive, ALL squirrels are actually vampires).

I’m not sure how to describe the art in the main story (there’s also a short backup tale), but it’s very impressive. It looks almost as if the pages could be stills from a computerized animation show, and some panels even seem as if they’re in 3-D.

All in all, very enjoyable.

4 OUT OF 5 STARS

First issues with new characters are always tricky so not a bad start to the series there! Yay!
